INEC Chair Says Algorithms Will Not Decide 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission has stated that algorithms will not determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections. The commission's chair made this statement at the Artificial Intelligence and Democracy Forum 2026 in Abuja.

He emphasized that the decision on who governs Nigeria rests solely with voters. The 2027 elections will be the largest democratic exercise on the African continent, with over 103 million registered voters participating.
The commission has completed 10 of the 14 major operational milestones outlined under the Electoral Act 2026. The INEC chair also warned about the potential threats of artificial intelligence to the credibility of the elections, including generative AI, deepfakes, and automated cyberattacks.
The commission is taking steps to combat these threats, including the deployment of AI-powered tools to detect anomalies in election results and combat disinformation.
